A rising water table We are seeing a growing problem of a rising water-table as the result of greater rainfall within shorter periods, sometimes associated with extreme conditions. If we are to address the problems connected with damage and inconvenience in a structural way, then in addition to rearranging the water line we will also have to give the water more space. That is not easy. We see water as a problem only when it occurs in undesired amounts and, moreover, space costs money. |
Space and water must be taken together Here too Dutchdam offers interesting possibilities for using space more efficiently. If Dutchdam is in use, then it is not necessary, for example, to construct any flood containment areas, which in principle may be created in dikes. Not only will the cost of these dikes be considerable, because the infrastructure has to be adapted to the local situation, but also there is an adverse effect on the environment; the loss of ground surface and the obstruction of the views of villages, farms and landscapes all contribute to the resistance of society to the idea of allocating more retention areas.
When the cost of setting up water containment basins is compared with that for Dutchdam, in particular for those locations where excess water has to be contained only occasionally, Dutchdam can be seen to have the advantage. By utilising Dutchdam, dikes and the facilities associated with them can remain considerably lower in height. The Dutchdam will pay for itself within a short period of time, through the drop in costs for part of the acquisition of ground for the dikes, as well as the necessary organisation of the infrastructures associated with them.
Water meadows, overflow areas, and the environment Natural overflow areas and water-meadows are also places where businesses have been established. Here, if the buildings and storage facilities can be partly equipped with dikes and partly with Dutchdam, the environment will be spared. If chemical substances are flushed out, especially any untreated ones, there is a great threat to the ecosystem. |
